Cover Scents

Since scent elimination products may not wipe out every last human scent molecule, anything that will help cover up the remaining trace is valuable. That's where cover scents come in. You will find cover scents in several different forms: wafers, liquids and gels. All will work fine as long as their base scent matches natural odors in the area where you hunt. Some cover scents will work well no matter where they're used. Earth scent, for example is a very popular cover for this reason.

Some of the scent elimination products (especially the sprays) actually contain their own built-in cover scents. Unlike attractant scents, cover scents can (and should) be deployed either on, or very near, the user. We feel cover scents should be subtle. In other words, we don't want to draw attention to ourselves in any way. High profile cover scents, such as skunk, will definitely cover some human scent but they also attract attention on their own.

Cover scents should be used close to your body so they will mingle with any trace human odor and confuse a deer that might otherwise pick up the human odor and react.

Again, this is simply opinion, but we prefer a scent that will be ignored: earthy, swampy and even urine based scents occur more often in the field and will stimulate less curiosity. Also, consider simply creating your own cover scents by bagging your clothing with cedar boughs (if you hunt near cedars) or with a big armload of dry leaves.

We also make a detour to walk through cow pies when hunting in and around a pasture. We rub our feet together to coat our boots with natural bovine cover scent!
